An unreleased cover of the song Evil by the band Cactus that Cirith Ungol played in their early years. Strictly speaking it’s not a cover of Cactus, but of Willie Dixon/Howlin’ Wolf. The song Evil is a Chicago blues standard written by Willie Dixon. Howlin’ Wolf recorded the song for Chess Records in 1954. It was included on the 1959 compilation album Moanin’ in the Moonlight. When he re-recorded it for The Howlin’ Wolf Album in 1969, “Evil” became Wolf’s last charting single (#43 Billboard R&B chart).

The reason that Cactus’ version is featured here instead of the original, is because this version was hand picked by Greg Lindstrom for his Heavy Rockin’ Raw compilation album. He writes in the liner notes that Cirith Ungol used to cover this song in their early years. Greg has also listed Cactus as being one of his favourite bands. So this is obviously the version that inspired them to play it.Β So perhaps it’s not wrong to say that Cirith Ungol’s version is a cover of a cover.
